The difference that lies in John Powells experience compared to what visitors have today is that he went there to have a scientific investigation of the place.

In the year 1869, John led some men on an expedition and they did the first documentation through the Grand canyon.

When people visit the grand canyon today, they visit it for tourist and entertainment purposes the Grand canyon is now a national Park.
