The Enlightenment was a time in Europe from the 17th century where there was a radical shift in thinking and new ideas gained support such as:

  • the need to separate the church from state
  • the idea of a social contract between rulers and those they ruled
  • the need for humans to be able to choose their own government

These ideas were included in the Constitution of the United States so we can conclusively state that the Enlightenment shaped the Founding Fathers and the American system of government.
