1. Read the following passage and answer the questions. Circle A, B or C.
svlad2 [7]

After reading the passage, we can choose the following answers:

1. A. educational values of Vietnamese people

2. C. They would become civil administrators

3. B. managed

4. C. characters

5. C. It promoted a sense of national independence among Vietnamese

The best answers to complete the second passage are:

1. A. divide

2. B. ends

3. B. starting

4. C. either

5. B. method

6. D. removes

7. A. loses

8. C. handed

9. D. continues

10. B. taken

The passage we must read to answer the first question is divided in two paragraphs. They do not discuss exactly the same thing - the first paragraph is about teachers, while the second one is about the writing system in Vietnam. However, they do have a theme in common: educational values. We learn that the Vietnamese people highly esteem their teachers as well as their independent identity, the latter being developed with the help of education, literacy.

The text does not say all teachers would become civil administrators. It does say that the test to become a civil administrator was quite challenging.

We can choose the word "manage" to substitute "conduct" in the passage, since both convey the idea of carrying something out. We can also see that the word "them" in the second paragraph is substituting the previously mentioned "Chinese characters" when the author says such characters were used for writing.

The second passage has blanks to be filled. A useful tip to solve this kind of question is to, first, take a brief look at all the options and then read the whole passage. Do not worry about finding the answers in order. Just give it a read, fill in the ones that are easier, more obvious, then work slowly with the others. Once you understand what the passage is about, it is easier to figure which words should go where.

For example, this passage, in particular, is explaining how a certain game is played. We know that, in games, it is possible to hand the turn to the other player. Thus, it makes sense to use the word "handed", option C, to complete number 8: the turn is handed to the other player.

What are the skills of a language?
Alex Ar [27]

Namely, most human language feature four skills, divided into productive skills and receptive skills.

 • Productive skills: speaking and writing.
 • Receptive skills: listening and reading.

For a long time, human languages only featured one productive skill, speaking, and one receptive skill, listening. Writing and reading would appear at a later time within the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia (who invented the cuneiform writing system) and ancient Egypt (who developed hieroglyphic and demotic writing systems). Even today, many human groups living in isolated and remote areas have not developed writing and reading, relying solely on speaking and listening and on oral tradition (passing down the history of the group from one generation to the next) for their communication needs.
