The late 19th century brought a larger number of people in America to the side of imperialistic action similarly to European countries throughout the 19th century. In 1898, the US engaged in the Spanish-American War and gained their first territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in addition to Cuba as a protectorate. In the same year, the US also annexed the Hawaiian islands.
