After World War I, the United States had adopted a policy of isolationism, where they would not participate in global warfare or officially join the League of Nations. Roosevelt delivered the Four Freedoms speech 11 months before the United States declared war on Japan. The Four Freedoms speech was a break from the previous period of anti-interventionism, and described how the United States would be willing and able to assist its allies already at war.
1. The Wilmot Proviso is a proposed law by United States politician David Wilmot to ban slavery in western territories gained from Mexico in Mexican-American War.
2. The main issues that led to Henry Clay's proposed compromise were a. California applying for its statehood, b. fugitive slave law was created, and c. northerners wanted the slave trade to be banned in Washington DC.
3. The status of new western territories would be decided by popular sovereignty in which the citizens would be the one to decide (by means of voting) whether their territory would permit or ban slavery.

The issue of slavery was a major underlying issue to the formation of the Republican party.
On May 20th, 1854, a group of politically- minded former Whigs met in Ripon , Wisconsin to talk about the possibility of forming a new political party that would focus on preventing the spread of slavery in the Western territories. The idea took off and on June 6th 1854, over 10,000 people gathered in Jackson, Michigan to establish the new party and thus the Republican party was born.
