Americans developed a concept known as "manifest destiny" in the 1800s. This was the belief that it was their destiny to conquer the Americas, and that this was both tenable and unavoidable.
Since many were prior slaves, they knew how to work off the land so it was easier for them. Plus most were discriminated against because of their skin color and could not find work elsewhere. Many more were uneducated so they couldn't have higher up jobs like being a lawyer.
