<h3>Answer: Choice D</h3>

...he that was strongest secured the best place; and few left the trough satisfied

============================================================

Explanation:

Frederick Douglass is describing the horrific conditions of what kind of food he ate and the conditions in which he had his meals. At the start of the paragraph, he describes the food itself (a corn meal called Mush). Then later on he describes how the food was served in a very degrading inhumane way (the food being served in a trough; effectively treating them as animals). Shortly after, he goes over how the food was eaten through a variety of means: use of oyster shells, shingles, or bare hands. None of which involves the regular utensils you'd expect such as a spoon.

At the very end of the excerpt, Frederick Douglass mentions that "He that ate the fastest got most; he was strongest secured the best place; and few left the trough satisfied". This effectively means that even though the food itself was horrible, and the conditions degrading, people were still hungry and had no other choice. Also, even the people who were able to eat the most weren't truly/fully fed.

So in short, the last part of the excerpt describes that the slaves weren't fed enough. If we could narrow down the cited evidence as much as possible, the portion that mentions "few left the trough satisfied" is the thing you should focus on.

Why do you think Annie Dillard read The Field Book of Ponds and Streams so many times
Natasha_Volkova [10]

Answer:

Annie Dillard read the book 'The Field Book of Ponds and Streams' so  many times as she found what she herself did not know she was looking for, the essential tools for naturalist trade.

Explanation:

"An American Childhood" is a memoir of Annie Billard. She wrote about her childhood and her high school days in the book.

In her book, she conveyed the message that how books help people to connect with each other emotionally as well as mentally. As Annie was an earnest reader, so when she was twelve years old, she enrolled herself in the nearest library, in Homewood. In that library, she found the book titled "The Field Book of Ponds and Streams."

<u>She states that she read it several times especially chapter 3 of the book, which explains the essential tools for naturalist trade. Till she read that chapter, she herself was unaware of what she was looking for. The book unveiled to her many words of water and the life of insects. </u>

<u>She used to read the book every year and used to go through the list of names of people who borrowed that book to know that there are other people like her who are eager to find out about the 'ponds' and 'streams.'</u>

Choose the most effective way to revise the following sentence for positive emphasis: Students cannot park in Lot C until August
Pani-rosa [81]

Answer:

Students will be able to park in Lot C from August 26 on.

Explanation:

Giving positive emphasis to a sentence means writing or saying it in a way that focuses on what people can do instead of what they cannot. To do so, it is important to avoid negative words and connotations. When that is not possible, one must try to keep the negative compact, presenting it in the middle of the sentence.

The sentence "Students cannot park in Lot C until August 25" has a negative emphasis, since it states a prohibition, a limitation. We could revise for positive emphasis in the following manner:

- Students will be able to park in Lot C from August 26 on.
