What did trips to South Boston mean for Henrietta and her family?

English

The trips to South Boston meant economic survival for Henrietta and her family because South Boston was the place that the Lacks took their tobacco crops for auctioning.

  • The regular trips to South Boston happened after the tobacco harvest, depicting the Lacks as poor tobacco farmers.

  • However, the main lesson from the non-fiction, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot, explored the problems of racism, classism, and sexism in America.

  • When Henrietta became sick and was diagnosed of cervical cancer, her cells, widely known as HeLa, were taken for medical research purposes without her full knowledge and expressed consent.

  • Since then, many medical advances have been attributed to researches on her ever-living cells, including polio vaccine.

Thus, without the trips to South Boston, Henrietta and her family would have found it too difficult to sell their crops.

Is the word in bold a direct object or an indirect object? The bank loaned Reba money for her new advertising business.
Bezzdna [24]

There are no words in bold, so I will answer in a way that will help you independently of what the word is.

Answer:

If the word in bold is "Reba", we have an indirect object.

If the word in bold is "money", we have a direct object.

Explanation:

Some verbs, such as "buy", "give" or "loan" often require two types of object. The direct object is the thing that is being bought, given, or loaned. It is the direct receiver of the action performed by the verb. The indirect object is the person to or for whom something is bought, given, or loaned. Depending on its position in the sentence, it may or may not appear preceded by a preposition (such as "to").

The different types of object answer different types of question:

- The bank loaned Reba money for her new advertising business.

1. The bank loaned what? Money. (direct object)

2. The bank loaned money to whom? Reba (indirect object)
