In "The Birthmark," Hawthorne develops the theme that insistence on physical perfection often leads to emotional harm. Which det

ails from the story contribute to the development of this theme?Select the two correct answers."'Then why did you take me from my mother’s side? You cannot love what shocks you!'""Aylmer’s sombre imagination was not long in rendering the birthmark a frightful object, causing him more trouble and horror than ever Georgiana’s beauty, whether of soul or sense, had given him delight.""It must not be concealed, however, that the impression wrought by this fairy sign manual varied exceedingly, according to the difference of temperament in the beholders.""Here, too, at an earlier period, he had studied the wonders of the human frame, and attempted to fathom the very process by which Nature assimilates all her precious influences from earth and air…"

The statements that correctly contribute to the theme that insistence on physical perfection often leads to emotional harm are;

 • "'Then why did you take me from my mother’s side? You cannot love what shocks you!'"
 • "Aylmer’s somber imagination was not long in rendering the birthmark a frightful object, causing him more trouble and horror than ever Georgiana’s beauty, whether of soul or sense, had given him delight."

The two statements, culled from The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne, show individuals who are troubled because of insistence on physical features. In the first sentence, the woman Georgina wonders why her husband Aylmer will marry her when the birthmark on her face shocks him. She is deeply angered by this.

In the second sentence, Aylmer is so invested in a birthmark that he feels troubled. These two experiences indicate that an insistence on physical features can cause emotional harm.

The prompt you have been asked to write about is one about a Reflect3ive Speech. The purpose of a Reflective Speech is for the orator to give an account of their experience of a particular event AND how that event has shaped them.

How do you write a Reflective Speech?

It is to be noted that the question is asking the student to assume the role of a noble laureate. That means you may want to study some of the speeches that have been given by Nobel Laureates.

Every great speech must start with proper outlines. One of the easiest outlines to use is the I - MID - C format. I mean introduction. This section is critical because it helps you connect with the audience. One of the best ways to start your speech is to start with a hilarious story.

The next is the MID, which is the midsection or body of the speech.

Assuming you are doing 400 words, your introduction can be about 100. The body is about 200, then the conclusion is another 100.

The conclusion is where you summarize and restate your key points. Finally, get to know your audience beforehand and rehearse your speech over and over again until you are confident about it.
