Overall, life in the West was much harder. For starters, the climate was extremely dry and hot, so it was hard to adapt when moving to Western lands. The harsh conditions meant there was a lot of work to be done. Every single person had a job to be done, and there was always some chore to do. In order to just survive, the entire family needed to pitch in. On the other hand, in the East, cities were thriving and growing as well as industries.
