Better late than never tells us that sometimes in life we miss some opportunities, but that does not mean we should never give a try.

Better late than never story

This is a story about an old man who lived in a village. He had two sons and one daughter. They were all well settled in their city life. His children would send him money every month so that he did not have any crisis. They also used to send letters to know about his well being.

Once in a year his sons and daughter would come to pay a visit to him but for the rest of the year his only source of communication was the letters. sometimes he would go to the post master of the village to read the letters for him because he did not know to read and write. The postmaster always used to help the old man reading and writing the letters for him. You may also read: God help those who help themselves

But unfortunately that post master died and a young postmaster got appointed. That young postmaster was a rude person who did not want to help the man. Slowly his way of communication with his children got cut off. He use to remain very upset.

One day the head master of the village school came to him and asked about his disappointment. The old man told him that because of his being illiterate he is facing trouble to get in touch with his children. He described how he never went to school because of his commitments towards his family. After listening to the his problem, the head master gave him a solution that instead of asking help from others he should once again start going to school and read and write.

The old man said everybody would laugh at him at this age studying. The headmaster told is better late than never. So following his advice the man joined the night school and started reading and writing. within few months he started writing letters to his children and getting their answers too. By then he did not have to go to anyone to read the letter. That day he was clear on the proverb that better late than never.

She then realizes just how important of a role her mom plays in her life. In the story The White Umbrella, the narrator, a young girl Chinese girl that goes to school with Americans, and has seemed that she has not completely found herself yet. Her mother and father both work. She shows her embarrassment of her mother working. After school, her sister and her take piano lessons at Miss Crossman’s house. While she sat and waited on her turn she spotted the white umbrella. She thought that she needed to hold it to fit in with others.

Her mother has told her that they can not afford extra things for them to have. She wants to have things like others instead of just showing herself and accepting that she can not have all the extra things like other kids. When her turn came to play the piano she tries’s her best to try and impress Miss Crossman. The narrator shows her insecurity by not accepted Miss Crossman’s ride, instead of walking in the rain. After piano lessons they waited outside in the rain. She offered them to come inside and she refused to do it.

Mona, the narrator’s sister finally decides to go inside. Miss Crossman goes outside and talks to the narrator. The narrator lies to Miss Crossman and tells her that her family drives a Convertible, and that her mother, a concert pianist, will come to pick them up anytime. Miss Crossman gives the white umbrella to her. She tells Miss Crossman that she wishes that she would have been her mother. The narrator begins to feel guilty, and that the Umbrella shows her disobedience towards her mother.

After their mom finally shows up, she hides the umbrella underneath her clothing so that her mother does not see. They get into a car wreck on the way home. She sees that her mom’s eyes are closed. She begins to think her mother may have died. She decides to scream. Then she sees that her mom just closed her eyes because things have frustrated her. When her mother gets out the car to talk to the other people in the accident, she throws the umbrella down the sewer.

This shows that you should never show ungratefulness for what you have. It does not matter about what you need to fit in with the people around you. It only matters what you need to live well. The white Umbrella, an informal story, it gives a life lesson. It can also entertain anyone who wants to read it. The narrator now knows how important her mother’s role has on her life. Hopefully she will show herself for now on instead of trying to carry on like others around her.

I would also say that when the family first hears the story of the monkey's paw, their curiosity is really about hearing a tale of magic and intrigue, almost like one who sits around a campfire and awaits a scary story, just for the thrill of it. After all, Mr. White complains early in the story about living so far out in the country that no one really stops by, especially on a night such as Jacobs describes, with its wind and rain. Truly, Jacobs sets the scene to be a scary story with the dismal opening.

When the Whites first see the monkey's paw, Mrs. White "drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously." Mr. White also takes the paw and examines it, though no descriptors are given about his reaction.

Once the family is in possession of the "talisman," they still treat the monkey's paw as if it is a joke, but when Mr. White makes his first wish, "a fine crash from the piano greeted his words, interrupted by a shuddering cry" from Mr. White, which frightens Mrs. White and Herbert. Mr. White claims that the paw moved when he wished, which causes the family to doubt their initial mirth at the story the soldier told. In the morning, however, they return to their disbelief.

By the end, when the wish of 200 pounds is granted in lieu of Herbert's death, and then the second wish seems to bring Herbert back to life, Mr. and Mrs. White both believe in the power of the paw, so much so that Mr. White uses his last wish to wish that Herbert returns to the dead.
