Both Generals were attempting to split the Confederacy, thus limiting the amount of supplies and support that each region could get. However, Sherman did this through the doctrine of Total War. He destroyed infrastructure, he pillaged farms, and he destroyed factories, leaving the south devastated wherever he went. Grant simply captured important towns for trade, manufacturing, and others of a similar manner. <span />
