liraira [26]

The first states emerged in the core civilizations throughout the preclassical period (8000 BCE to 600 BCE). The first empires were established when strong cities used conquest to impose their dominance on neighbouring regions. Empires increased significantly during the classical period (600 BCE to 600 CE) by conquering new territories using mighty armies. All classical civilizations eventually could not handle the issues brought on by their internal or external crises. Most of the time, even as these empires' political institutions crumbled, the belief systems they produced left permanent cultural imprints.

Case of Roman Empire

  • Roman Empire took a few steps to consolidate its political power.
  • Establishment of Imperial Institutions - which gave effective control over the military
  • Currency: It was not only an economic tool but also a Political tool as Emperor would use imagery on coins to popularise themselves.
  • Monumental Building: Multiple temples, a new forum, bathhouses, and theatres were all built under Augustus' direct and covert encouragement. He also built an enormous arch and the well-known "Ara Pacis", an altar to Augustan peace.

Hence, these are a few measures a classical empire used to consolidate its political power.
