"The Lagoon" by Joseph Conrad is a short story published in 1897. The story tells us of a white man who is travelling in Indonesia. He is forced to stay for a night at the home of an Indonesian friend named Arsat. Arsat tells the white man that his wife is dying, and proceeds to tell him the tragic story of how they came to be together. When the woman dies, the white man offers to take Arsat with him. However, he decides he wants to avenge his brother's death.
