Answer:

European/American slave trade heavily relied on Africans to acquire slaves. They were not able to reach far past the coast to get their own slaves so they proposed deals with African warlords and leaders to get slaves for them. The incentives they were given were mainly valuables/profits, resources, weapons and new equipment, safety from conflicts with Europeans/Americans, and mainly whatever they wanted from the Europeans/Americans at the time.
