Lizabeth thought that Miss Lottie's Marigold was out of place because

  • It did not fit in or correspond to the rotting decay of her house and their community.

Lizabeth and the other children did not like the Marigolds in Miss Lottie'shouse because they were too beautiful and did not fit into the rotting decay of their house.

They wondered how there could be such beauty in the midst of the rot they found in their community and Miss Lottie's house. Lizabeth noticed the zeal with which Miss Lottie weeded the grasses surrounding the flower.

In time, she will realize that the Marigolds were the only things that gave Miss Lottie hope in the midst of so much suffering.
