The arithmetic progression allows to find the algebraic formula of the sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 is:

     aₙ = 3n -2

given parameters

  • Values of the sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, 13

to find

  • Algebraic expression

An arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers such that the difference between two consecutive numbers is constant.

             a_n - a_{n-1} = d

where aₙ and a_{n-1} are two consecutive terms and d is the ratio between them

in this case

            d = 4 -1 = 3

            d = 7 -4 = 3

            d = 10 - 7 = 3

            d = 13 -10 = 3

so the ratio of the sequence is 3

the first term of the sequence is given

          a₁ = 1

so we can write the general arithmetic progression

          a_n = a_1 + (n-1) d

where aₙ is the nth term, a₁ is the first term, d is the ratio and n is an integer that serves as a counter.

We substitute

           aₙ = 1 + (n-1) 3

           aₙ = 1 + 3n - 3

           aₙ = 3n - 2

Using the arithmetic progression we find the algebraic formula of the given sequence is: aₙ = 3n -2

Why do economists measure profit differently from accountants?
lianna [129]

Accountants only concern themselves with direct costs which involve things like the cost of materials, rent, and labor for instance. This profit is aptly named "accounting profit".

Economists consider those costs as well, but they also include indirect costs such as opportunity costs of other investments. Recall that opportunity cost is the cost of what you give up if you make a certain decision.

For instance, if a car factory makes 4 door sedans, but it could be making more money with SUVs, then the opportunity cost is high and the economic profit is lower compared to the accounting profit.

How did some students and tutors find shortcuts to learning? How did the Chinese government react to these shortcuts?
Nuetrik [128]

According to a different source, this question refers to the text "The Chinese Civil Service Exam System” by Ichisada Miyazaki.

In this text, we learn that the Chinese civil service examination system originated in Ancient China nearly fourteen hundred years ago. Therefore, it is one of the oldest examination systems in the world.

The system was intended to identify the most capable young men in China, and educate them so that they might become part of the government. However, this was a long, difficult and tedious process, and many students and tutors found useful shortcuts to learning. For example, rapid-study methods were devised, such as compiled collections of examination answers.

The Chinese government was aware of such methods, which were strongly condemned. Students who employed them were failed. The government also issued frequent prohibitions of the publication of such materials. However, the success of the business meant that such prohibitions were often unsuccessful.
