The Scopes trial can be seen as an attempt to expose the religious fundamentalism that took control of the government. This fundamentalism came with the Butler Act prohibiting the teaching of Evolutionary science in public universities and schools.
The trial occurred from July 10th to 21st in Dayton, Tennessee and was highly publicized. The substitute teacher John T. Scopes was charged for violating the state law by teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. He admitted he had taught the theory and was convicted and had to pay a fine of $100.
The effects generated from this trial were inevitable. It increased the political and legal conflict between fundamentalists and scientists. With anti-evolutionary laws spreading in the entire country both in North and South.
