Methemoglobinemia is a blood disorder in which too little oxygen is delivered to your cells. Oxygen is carried through your bloodstream by hemoglobin, a protein that’s attached to your red blood cells. Normally, hemoglobin then releases that oxygen to cells throughout your body. The poison is due to nitrate metabolizing triglycerides; this is the contributing factor in high nitrate in the drinking water and also nitrate exposure if eating contaminated vegetables like letture.<span>

This condition arises in in newborn infants as a result of been exposed to high level of nitrates. Newborn infants are usually exposed to unhealthy level of nitrates via nitrate contaminated water that is used to mix their food formula. Presence of high dose of nitrate in the body drastically reduces the amount of oxygen that is found in the blood, this make the color of the baby to become bluish. Other symptoms associated with this condition are: difficulty in breathing, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, weakness, etc.
