Caricatures - parodies, exaggerations, ridicules
The meaning of caricatures in this text is a parody which has an identical story's core but made with a distinctly different version. The reviewers claimed that Hughes described the story with too much humor in it which made it called "a failure" by the critics. Hughes reformed the story with additional humor in it.
