What Joseph McCarthy did was hunt down people in the government, or in other words, he made false accusations that some of the government employees were communist, those people being in the State Department and the U.S Army. He targeted people in the government and the army. During their time when people were against Communism, people actually believed what he said and he gained a lot of followers because of it.
