In WWII Japanese Infantry were usually armed with Arisaka family bolt action rifles. Bolt actions have a significant limitation in combat as you can only shoot once before having to load another bullet into the chamber. Another factor of their casualties was fire bombing from U.S. planes burning entire areas to the ground. The most effective of these campaigns was the fire bombing of Tokyo as part of Operation Meetinghouse.
