The Middle Colonies attracted a large population for several reasons: they had plenty of fertile land, naviagable rivers, good harbors, and the colonies were tolerant of other religious, which gave them a cosmopolitan character.
This larger population led to the formation of cities, the largest cities in Colonial America: New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore
