Amy Tan fell in love with an American boy. When Amy found out that her parents had invited the minister's family she felt worried about what Robert would think of her family and their lack of proper American manners. Amy's mother created a strange menu. When the minister's family and her relatives arrived, Amy wanted to disappear because she felt embarrassed by the dinner even though she loves Chinese food. After everyone had gone Amy's mother knew how Amy felt at the dinner and she realized that Amy wanted to look less Chinese. Amy's mother wanted her to dress like a typical American girl although she told Amy to be proud of been Chinese. After all Amy realized the true purpose behind the menu, her mother had chosen all her favorite food.
