It was discovered as the the process in which working with metals was an important task to create individual parts, assemblies, etc. It was when the copper smelting was very common the use of alloy was discovered and manufactured to use. Neither option "a" or option "c" can be.Paleolithic period corresponds to use of stones and Viking's Age is later (8th - 11 th centuries).
