Answer:

The author, Gary Paulsen, most likely made this description so graphic because he wanted to better convey the tone, or mood, of the scene. Paulsen used heavy imagery to "show" rather than "tell." Meaning he wanted the reader to better visualize what Brian is seeing as opposed to just stating what's happening. It helps the reader feel an emotional connection.
