While doing this, Proctor protects his reputation which upholds his character. While tearing up the document led to proctor being hanged(rip Giles) , he died a "christian", or a good man. He essentially protected his moral integrity. The importance of honor and reputation to Proctor is shown in the scene where he shouts,"LEAVE ME MY NAME." His desire to keep his name speaks of hiw highly he valued reputation and honor.
