I would say that three important influences on
the growth of democracy in America were the
American Revolution that forged a new
independent republic with its own constitution,
the Civil War and also the Civil Rights Movement
that resulted in much greater freedom for black
Americans and also the protests against the war
in Vietnam which eventually were successful in
helping end that unjust war and showing that
when aroused citizens take action against such
a war they can succeed in helping to end it
when it becomes so unpopular and so anti-
human as it did.
