Since both proton and electron are equal in number therefore a chlorine atoms also consists of 17 electrons.  

The atomic number of chlorine atom is equal to 35.  

Atomic number is the sum of proton and neutron.  

Therefore, if 17 protons are removed from atomic mass 35, 18 neutrons are left.
