The red letter signifies what she did was unpure and she is an adulteress. The letter is a daily reminder and punishment for her and for everyone around her to know what she did. It is signified as worse than death because she has to live with the consequences of her actions for the rest of her life and suffer because of her actions. The scarlet letter is so bright so it can be prominent throughout her story
