Reasons for large population increase in 1700s. The first successful colony in America was in Jamestown, Virginia, established 1607. When it was first founded, the colony contained only several hundred people. During the two hundred years that followed the population increased greatly, due in part to massive immigration from the Old World.

During the Civil War, what was the reason for secession of the Southern States?
Delicious77 [7]

The Southern States had different opinions from the Northern States.

The Southern States wanted to keep

  • Slavery
  • State-Based Rule, not a Central Government

The Northern States wanted the opposite. Those were 2 MAIN reasons why the Southern States left. There were MANY other factors to this as well, such as the Missouri Compromise line, that rule was broken when the Northerners got California and other land that passed that line. Then there was also Bleeding Kansas which fueled both side's anger. Many slaves escaped into the Northern States to become free, and the Southerners passed laws that punished any Northerners that aided this process, the result was, tensions rose.

Overall, there was so many factors to the secession of the Southern States that you would have to spend quite a bit of time and you would have to analyze each occurrence and see which had the greatest impacts.

The two main that I found were

  • Slaves
  • South wanted more power to States, North wanted Central Government

Hope it was of use. Good luck!

I need help on question 2
bazaltina [42]
Angered by the effect of the British naval blockade on cotton prices and British support for Indian attacks against white frontier settlers, farmers in the South and West strongly supported the War of 1812. The war ended two years later with few issues settled between the two nations. The most significant battle took place after the peace treaty was signed in 1814, when General Andrew Jackson, a Tennessee slaveholder, decisively defeated the British forces at New Orleans. This resounding victory made him a national hero and symbol of frontier fighters and earned him the nickname “Old Hickory.” Although he secured victory using regular troops armed with artillery power, ten years later Samuel Woodward celebrated the role of sharpshooters armed with Kentucky long rifles in his song “The Hunters of Kentucky.” This immensely popular song, filled with images of Old Hickory and his men overwhelming the well-trained army of John Bull (a symbol of Britain), became an effective element in Jackson’s successful 1828 campaign for president.
