In Part A of this activity, you will complete a table with details that show how the historical and cultural setting influences

characterization, plot, and theme in an adapted excerpt from The Underdogs. In Part B, you will analyze how the life experiences of Mariano Azuela are reflected in the excerpt.
The Underdogs
by Mariano Azuelo (adapted excerpt)
Some men on horseback rode up, shouting and sweating; two of them dismounted, while the other hung back to watch the horses.
"We want food! Give us eggs, milk, beans, anything you've got! We're starving!"
The speaker wore chevrons1 on his arm, his companion red stripes on his shoulders.
"Whose place is this, old woman? Of course it's not empty. How about the light and that child there? Look here, confound it, we want to eat, and quick too. We’re coming in."
"Tell me what they call this ranch, woman?" the sergeant asked.
"Limon," the woman replied curtly, carrying wood to the fire and fanning the coals.
"So we're in Limon, eh, the famous Demetrio Macias' country, eh? Do you hear that, Lieutenant? We're in Limon. I'll wager you know Macias the bandit, old woman? I was in the pen with him at Escobedo, once."

Answer:

Characterization The setting influences what the characters need. The soldiers are hungry because the setting is a difficult place to find food.

Plot The setting influences how the story’s rising action develops. The soldiers stop at the ranch to demand food and discover that they are in the “famous Demetrio Macias' country” where they learn that the man living at the ranch is Demetrio Macias.

Theme The setting influences how the theme is introduced. The placement of soldiers on the sierra introduces a theme related to war or battle.

PLEASE HELP!!!<br> What impact does the extended dog metaphor have on the tone of “Reunion”?
Alexxandr [17]
I'll post parts of the story that used the dogs as metaphors.

<span>"He chuckled as their muffled noises reminded him of whimpering puppies down at the animal shelter where he volunteered. Puppies always seemed to make noises as they played and whined for attention from the older dogs or volunteers. He liked working in the smaller dog area where all the older dogs looked out for the puppies, just like family, just like his family of older members looking out for the younger ones."

The metaphor of the dog gave me a clear picture of what their family is and how they act towards one another.

Their family is big in number and most of them are kids. They are a boisterous bunch and they enjoy each others company just like puppies. The older batch of cousins are like the big dogs that keep watch over the younger cousins like puppies.

Their family is big, happy, warm, and clearly enjoys each others company.</span>
