How and what techniques did Claude Monet use to compose the Haystacks paintings?

Monet created this impressionist series of haystacks using oil paint. The series became famous for his return to the same subject at different times and seasons to show how lighting and atmosphere would effect the same scene. He began the first of 25 paitings in the summer of 1890 and ended in the spring.
