En Ecuador, el llamado “boom bananero”, llegó en la década de los 50 cuando la economía mundial sufrió varios golpes debido a la II Guerra Mundial.

Según estadísticas de años anteriores, se conoce que Ecuador inició en la exportación de banano en el año 1910.

Explanation:Como es costumbre en Ecuador, sus bonanzas económicas están supeditadas a los designios del mercado internacional. Este caso no es diferente: El banano hasta entonces mundialmente famoso de Centro América fue azotado por la plaga: “Mal de Panamá”, lo que obligó a grandes compañías a buscar el fruto en otras partes del mundo debido a la alta demanda de Estados Unidos y Europa del producto a nivel internacional. La suerte le llegó al Ecuador.

Varias transnacionales como The United Fruit ayudaron al desarrollo del boom bananero en Ecuador.

La United Fruit y la Standart Fruit, empresas transnacionales norteamericanas se establecieron en Ecuador, el primero para establecer sus plantaciones, y el segundo para limitarse a vender el banano ecuatoriano en el extranjero. A diferencia de otros países, el mercado del banano ecuatoriano se basó en cultivos pequeños y medianos de propiedad de empresarios y campesinos nacionales, por lo cual, las transnacionales mencionadas no lograron asentar sus monopolios en el país.

Por otro lado, la larga crisis producida por el fin del boom Cacaotero y el fin del modelo agroexportador basado en un único producto habían provocado en que la producción agrícola de la costa se diversificara con productos como el café, el arroz y el mismo banano.

Posteriormente, el gobierno de Galo Plaza Lasso recibió el asesoramiento de la United Fruit, del FMI y del pensamiento cepalino sobre la Industrialización por sustitución de importaciones (ISI) con lo cual facilitó el apoyo estatal a través de la construcción de infraestructura adecuada, así como de créditos con intereses favorables para el cultivo de esta fruta, especialmente en El Oro y Santo Domingo. Sumado a esto, la mano de obra barata, abierta a la explotación y la riqueza del suelo ecuatoriano fueron factores que apoyaron el estallido de este boom económico.
