If you were to read Anne Frank, you'd know by Mr. Van Daan's situtation that he's not being greedy from this action. However, if you didn't have background information, you could tell by the text that he's being sneaky thereby giving the impression that he's greedy and selfish.

The better answer may be B, as he is a very considerate man and probably wouldn't sneak food for himself.
