When a person is making a persuasive argument that utilizes the peripheral route, they rely on factors unrelated to their actual message to persuade their listener. The hope is that these factors will encourage positivity with the message itself.

The peripheral route, which consists of persuading someone by appealing to elements outside the message, has an effect mainly on the subconscious and corresponds to decisions that are made automatically.

 • When the person projects her/his information from the peripheral route, he/she does not focus on the plot, but on matters of less depth, so that they do not require rationality for understanding.

 • The peripheral route appeals to the spectator's automatic or unconscious processes.

 • It is named peripheral because the interest is not focused on the arguments, but on the peripheral elements that surround the message, in such a way that the cognitive effort is lower or, even, its reception reaches be automatic.

Therefore, we can conclude that when a person is making a persuasive argument that utilizes the peripheral route, they rely on factors unrelated to their actual message to persuade their listener.
