The conflict revolves around the differences between the cultures of the two. Suyuan understands tradition and obedience as being essential in the relationship between parents and children. June, on the other hand, was born in America and has already embodied different values from her mother's. She does not understand the need to strive for perfection or to obey blindly. She wants to be free to be herself and to do what she wants, even if it means being mediocre.
