Did hunter-gatherers stay in packs or by them selfs?

They lived in small groups because if they lived in large groups they would kill off and eat all their resources. Keeping this in consideration, why did hunter gatherers live in small bands? There is reason to believe that all hierarchic groups, at some time in their history, had abundant food.
