In the poem “Afterwards,” Hardy uses figurative language, including euphemism, to develop meaning and tone. What is the meaning
Ne4ueva [31]
In the poem "Afterwards," Hardy uses many euphemisms to refer to death. He never actually says the words die, dead, or death.

Instead, he says things like: "If I pass during..." Here, the term "pass" is replacing the word "die." He also uses the very wordy "When the Present has latched its postern behind my tremulous stay" (which basically means "When the present is behind me" or "When I am part of the past").

The effect of these euphemisms is to have a quiet, calming effect on the reader. If he constantly used the words "die" and "death" throughout the poem, the dreamlike quality of the poem would be altered.

Instead, using terms like "afterward" and all the other euphemisms allows Hardy to discuss death without actually discussing it. In this way, he wonders what the rest of the world will do "after."

Write a journal entry of five to ten complete sentences. What did you think about the way Annie Sullivan handled her first day a
katrin [286]

Answer:

'Today was my first day at the Kellers estate. Already I have made great acquaintance with my new student Hellen. The pore soul, both blind, deaf, and mute, she has hardly anything to do but cause trouble and tie up her mother from her work. I feel that this is a great mission for me, for It will humble me and teach me patience as I sit in this locked room for which Hellen has confined me to. Also, I have found Hellens parents the most arguable. We had fallen under the subject of the great Civil War, and the idea of slavery. It horrifies me to know that the Kellers themselves have not only have followed to the trade of slavery, but owned a bunch slaves for their own estate. I do hope, that this topic does not come up again.'
