They protested, saying that these taxes violated their rights as British citizens. The colonists started to resist by boycotting, or not buying, British goods.

They would agree with this idea up to a certain point. Sociologists who've been studying how the wider family has been losing it's importance know that it's not that vital as it was a few decades ago. However, they still represent an important social support structure for the nuclear family.
