A desire for glory and riches. Ulysses only had to blind the Cyclops because he was being rude and stole all of their cheese and expected the monsters to shower him with riches. I dunno about you, but if I was that Cyclops I would have been pretty mad too, no wonder they tried to eat him! Long story short, Ulysses was mean.
