Ratios are used to compare quantities of different measures

Forms

Ratios are represented in any of the following forms

 • Ratio = a : b
 • Ratio = a / b

For three quantities, the ratio would be

 • Ratio = a : b : c

Examples

Assume the proportion of milk and chocolate is 1 to 2.

The ratio would be represented as:

 • Milk : Chocolate = 1 : 2

Other possible examples are:

Simplify: (–8) • (6) – (5) • (–2)
horrorfan [7]

(–8) • (6) – (5) • (–2)

= (-8*6)-(5*-2)

= (-48)-(-10)

= -48+10

= -38

(–4) • (9) – (5) • (–2)

= (-4*9)-(5*-2)

= (-36)-(-10)

= -36+10

= -26

Evaluate 3(a – 4b) when a = –2 and b = 5.

= 3[-2 - 4(5)]

= 3[-2 -20]

= 3(-22)

= -66

Evaluate 4(a – 3b) when a = –4 and b = 6.

= 4[-4 - 3(6)]

= 4[-4 -18]

= 4(-22)

= -88

Evaluate 5(a – 2b) when a = –3 and b = 5.

= 5[-3 - 2(5)]

= 5(-3 - 10)

= 5(-13)

= -65
