The doctrine of "separate but equal" was the dominant one before <em>Brown v. Board of Education</em> questioned this assumption. The government claimed that even though schools were segregated, all children received quality education  in their own schools. When this was questioned, the Supreme Court wanted to discover the truth. Therefore, they were interested in these findings because they believed they could inform their final decision.
