Complete Question #2 on p. 17 of They Say, I Say (Reproduced below): Read the following paragraph from an essay by Emily Poe, a

student at Furman University. Disregarding for the moment what Poe says, focus your attention on the phrases she uses to structure what she says (italicized here). Then write a new paragraph in which you (like Poe) dispel a misconception. Use Poe's paragraph as a model but replace her topic, vegetarianism, with one of your own. The term "vegetarian" tends to be synonymous with "tree-hugger" in many people's minds. They see vegetarianism as a cult that brainwashes its followers into eliminating an essential part of their daily diets for an abstract goal of "animal welfare." However, few vegetarians choose their lifestyle just to follow the crowd. On the contrary, many of these supposedly brainwashed people are actually independent thinkers, concerned citizens, and compassionate human beings. For the truth is that there are many good reasons for giving up meat. Perhaps the best reasons are to improve the environment, to encourage humane treatment of livestock, or to enhance one's own health. In this essay, then, closely examining a vegetarian diet as compared to a meat-eater's diet will show that vegetarianism is clearly the better option for sustaining the Earth and all its inhabitants.

PilotLPTM [1.2K]

Answer:

Red meat was expensive, and only the rich could afford it

Explanation:

The Elizabethans ate three meals a day like anyone else, the meals varying from a chord to their riches among families. Poorer people could only buy vegetables and white meat such as fish, chicken and rabbits while the rich could eat red meat more consistently. In 1563 Elizabeth created a law that compelled everyone to eat fish meat every Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays by encouraging the fish industry and reducing the fish price to the poor.

Consider the following sentence and then identify what type of sentence it is:
Setler [38]

The answer is C. Compound-complex.

A compound sentence is a sentence that contains two or more independent clauses connected by a comma, conjunction or semicolon. An independent clause contains a subject and verb and conforms a complete idea. A complex sentence is a sentence that makes a combination between one independent clause with at least one dependent clause.

In this case, the structure is the following:

<u>Joan was singing because she was happy,</u> and <u>she danced as she sang.</u> Both are independent clauses.

"<u>because she was happy</u>" is a dependent clause, specifically an adverb clause of reason.
