La Paz, is the Headquarters of the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. It is the most important political, cultural and financial center in Bolivia. The city is also the capital of the department of the same name. With an estimated population of 789 541 inhabitants, in 2015, La Paz is the third most populated city in the country. Its metropolitan area, which includes the municipalities of El Alto, Viacha, Achocalla, Laja, Mecapaca, Palca and Pucarani, is the most populated in the country, reaching a population of 1.87 million inhabitants. Located in western Bolivia, 68 km southeast of Lake Titicaca, La Paz is located in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River and is surrounded by the high mountains of the altiplano, including the imposing Illimani, whose silhouette has been the most important emblem of the city since its founding. At an average height of 3650 meters above sea level, La Paz is the metropolis and highest administrative capital in the world.
