In the end, McCarthy's evidence did not support his claim of the presence of communists in the State Department but resurrected the <em>Salem Witch Trials of 1692/93</em> with McCarthyism.

Instead, McCarthyism became mere accusation propaganda during the infamous Red Scare. Through Senator McCarthy, baseless accusations were leveled against suspected sympathizers of Communism. Some other freethinkers were questioned by Congress, while many more persons and groups were denied justice.

Thus, McCarthyism resembled the Salem Witch Trials in colonial Massachusetts (1692 to 1693) because the state negatively reacted to Communism.
