In the historical context, historian Eric Foner writes: "The sight of women lecturing in public to mixed female and male audienc

es and taking part in public debate on political questions aroused considerable criticism." Thinking about the historical context, gender roles, and American society in 1830, why do you think women speaking out in public against slavery caused so much agitation?

The reason women speaking out in public against slavery caused unprecedented agitation because, in 1830, women in America still belonged to the kitchen and the bedroom.

It was then unprecedented for women like Frances Wright, Lucretia Mott, and Maria Stewart to courageously campaign against the evils of slavery. To worsen the situation, it was not until 1920 that Congress passed the 19th Amendment, granting women suffrage.

Then, men believed that women were part of their acquired possessions and they were not given a voice in the politics of the nation. It was simply a scandal for women to speak freely about their views.

Thus, the reason women speaking out in public against slavery caused agitation among men was that it was unheard of for women to air their views when they could not vote on public issues.

What is the difference between a direct democracy and indirect (Representative) democracy? Which one is the US?
Firdavs [7]

Explanation:

Representative democracy is a form of democracy in which people vote for representatives who then vote on policy initiatives as opposed to a direct democracy, a form of democracy in which people vote on policy initiatives directly.

Direct democracy was not what the framers of the United States Constitution envisioned for the nation. They saw a danger in tyranny of the majority. As a result, they advocated a representative democracy in the form of a constitutional republic over a direct democracy

On what was the idea of religious toleration narrowly focused
irinina [24]

Religious toleration narrowly focused on Christianity. As a consequence, in most colonies Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and other non- Christian religious groups constituted a vast minority. Thus, Christianity was tolerated and in spite of the fact that puritans did not tolerate differences, there were colonies for Protestants and Catholics as well. I addition to this, that narrow toleration was claimed to be broader.
