Answer:Would you confess to doing something you did not do, if it went against your beliefs? In the end of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor had to make a decision about whether he would lie about doing witchcraft and live, or die and tell the truth about not doing witchcraft. John Proctor made the right decision by not confessing to witchcraft because.

John Proctor always cared about his image and how people saw him as a person.

John Proctor shows this by turning down Abigail for another affair, he knows he committed a crime and doesn't want his image ruined because of it. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby.” (Miller 23) John Proctor knew he committed adultery when he had his affair with Abigail. Adultery is when you are in a relationship and you cheat on your partner. John knew that what he did was wrong so he tried to convince Abigail to not speak or even think about what they did. He was trying to get away from this affair, since he committed a sin by cheating on his wife. He wanted to be forgiven for this sin that he did, which is way worse compared to lying about witchcraft. John Proctors' image played a big role in his final decision on whether or not he should confess to witchcraft.

John Proctors' wife Elizabeth also played a huge role in his final decision. Before he actually made his decision, his wife Elizabeth tried to influence his life one last time.”It is not my soul, John, it is yours. Only be sure of this, for I know it no Whatever you will do, it is a good man does it. I have read my own heart this three months, John. I have sins of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lechery… I counted myself so plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come to me! Suspicion kissed you when I did; I never knew how I should say my love.” (Miller 136-137) Since John cared so much about his image, it would only make sense that he would care about what his own wife thinks of him the most. Elizabeth gave him reassurance that no matter what he did, she would still care for him and love him. Even though he had an affair and committed adultery, Elizabeth still forgave him for it in the end. John used these words from Elizabeth to make his final decision for life or death.

John's decision was made because he wanted to keep his image clean. When John ripped up the agreement he had to sign that said that he had done witchcraft, he yelled at Danforth as to why he did that. ¨Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!¨ (MIller 143) John Proctor talks about how he only gets one name in his life. He means that if he were to sign this document and lie about him doing witchcraft, that would tarnish his name and people would most likely hate him for what he has ¨done.¨ Instead of lying and losing his image, John decides to just get hung and be sent to God rather than living knowing he lied. All of the townspeople like Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey who were also on their way to be hanged, loved John for what he did and before he died the whole town was cheering for him. All the people were worried that if John were to save himself, that he would be selling himself to the devil and when he did end up dying naturally, he would be in hell forever. John may have had to die, but he made the right decision.

John Proctor made the right decision by not confessing to witchcraft John tried to clear things up with Abigail to protect his image, his wife was able to forgive John, which helps his image in his own eyes, and he chose not to lie about doing witchcraft to protect his image again and to not sin. John Proctor showed why you shouldn't lie even if it may benefit you. John could have lived if he lied, but he chose not to lie and sin because of his image, and his beliefs.
