Yes understanding how to perform your own research is a necessary life skill because if you need to get a job you should research that place you wish to work at without just diving head first into it, you should research the position you want so you could relate your skill with it. Also the way you decipher good from bad research is you use good judgment. Its all in your opinions and trust your gut instincts.
