Most whites had guns that they would threaten African Americans with so they would not speak their mind and try to obtain justice for themselves. The Jim Crow laws are segregation laws that heavily enforced racism especially in the South. Whites made sure that polls had taxes therefore blacks would not be able to vote, so they would keep a person who wanted to keep slavery in power.
